"Hello,
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?"
-- Pink Floyd

I'd forgotten this blog even existed until I made a comment today on a Blogger blog and decided to check my own profile out. Is it time to revive the dead, or bury it?

"Political anxiety in an election year is to blame for a lot of the bad bills Congress passes."
-- Rep. Jeff Flake, on a proposed $100 rebate to taxpayers to compensate for higher gas prices.

As if that wasn't completely obvious... Will they spend another $34million to send out letters telling us our checks are in the mail again, like they did when Bush took office and gave out tax rebates in a pathetic attempt to gain popularity? Not that I'll refuse any check they send me... but I still think it's a dumb idea. For starters, the cost of mailing the checks out to every tax payer is quite high. Then there's the total lack of proportion: taxpayers who don't drive at all get the same "gas rebate" as taxpayers who drive a semi for a living. Want to really help consumers out with the high gas prices? Repeal a portion of the taxes!

Democracy is the art and science of running the circus from the monkey cage.

As has been noted before, by many other people, W kinda looks like a monkey....

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise
of fighting a foreign enemy.
-- James Madison

How very prophetic.

Hell, there are no rules here. We're trying to accomplish something.
-- Thomas A. Edison

Obviously Edison never worked in a modern automobile factory....

Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn't place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.
-- Jamie Raskin, testifying Wednesday, March 1, 2006 before the Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee in response to a question from Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs about whether marriage discrimination against gay people is required by "God's Law."

This comes to me from the tagline of a friend's e-mail, and I love it. I'm just sorry that the state of our government is such that this sort of thing needs to be said.
